A police bus driver has been arrested for allegedly knocking down and killing a motor rider at Abeka in the Greater Accra Region.
The unfortunate incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, October 30, 2024.
Information gathered indicates that the police bus driver attempted to bypass traffic by using the opposite lane, resulting in a fatal collision with the rider.
The crash intensified a heavy traffic jam stretching from Tesano through the Achimota overhead towards Nsawam.
An eyewitness, Felix Aryeetey, who is a fuel attendant at the Shell station near Abeka Junction, narrated the incident, noting that the motorrider died on the spot.
“They are having a passing out ceremony at the police depot and so there has been traffic and the police have taken the other lane of the road and when they are coming, they come on top speed and I heard a crash. A police bus driver knocked down a motorbike rider and the rider died on the spot.”
The accident occurred on Sunday, October 20, 2024.
Information gathered indicates that the tragic event unfolded when two officers from the Formed Police Unit (FPU) sought shelter at a nearby filling station during a rainstorm.
While there, they spotted two men on a motorbike and attempted to stop them.
However, the men refused to comply, prompting the officers to give them a chase on their motorcycle.
Tragically, during the pursuit, the officers collided with a pedestrian.
The officer riding at the back was thrown off the motorcycle, hitting his head on the ground.
He was immediately rushed to the Kpandai Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
