Vinicius Jr vows to continue anti-racism fight despite missing out on Ballon d’Or

Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr has vowed to keep fighting against racism, even if his activism cost him the Ballon d’Or.

Sources close to the Brazil forward revealed that Vinicius believes his outspoken stance against racism played a part in his second-place finish in the voting for the prestigious award, which went to Spain and Manchester City midfielder Rodri.

After the results, Vinicius posted on X, saying, “I will do it 10 times if I have to. They’re not ready,” as Real Madrid cancelled plans to attend the Paris ceremony in solidarity with the Brazilian.

Vinicius’ management explained that his message referenced his commitment to confronting racial injustice, asserting that the football world might not be ready for a player who challenges the system.

The 24-year-old has been a target of racial abuse in Spain, with at least two recent convictions marking significant strides against racism in La Liga.

His teammate Eduardo Camavinga and Brazilian legend Marta were among those voicing support, declaring Vinicius the “best player in the world” regardless of awards.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, was honoured as the men’s club of the year, with Carlo Ancelotti named men’s coach of the year after a near-flawless campaign.
