Don’t rely on miracles: Sam Johnson’s call to action for Ghana Football
Former Ghana defender Sam Johnson has voiced his disappointment over Ghana’s troubling position in the race for qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
He emphasized the uncomfortable reality that the team’s hopes now depend on the misfortunes of Sudan to secure a spot in the tournament.
In a recent interview with Graphic Sports, Johnson lamented that Ghana, once regarded as a football powerhouse on the continent, is now left to rely on the failures of other teams.
“It’s sad we’re now praying for Sudan to lose their remaining games so we can qualify. God doesn’t work like that because the Sudanese also worship the same God,” he said, capturing the frustration of fans and players alike.
The former defender highlighted that Ghana’s current situation indicates underlying issues that require immediate attention.
Instead of waiting for a miracle, he recommended that the national team concentrate on properly preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
According to Johnson, acknowledging the possibility of not qualifying for AFCON could be a constructive step toward enhancing the team’s prospects in future competitions.
“If we qualify for AFCON, it will be a miracle that has never happened before. Let’s focus on the World Cup and organize ourselves better. If we make it to AFCON, I’ll be surprised but happy,” he shared, underscoring the need for strategic planning and introspection as Ghana navigates this challenging moment.
As the Black Stars await their fate, Sam Johnson’s words reflect a growing sentiment among supporters: a call for Ghana to rebuild and refocus instead of relying on external outcomes to determine the way forward.
