Bloody Bawku conflict: 15 victims murdered — Chief’s lawyer

The lawyer for the Bawku Naaba, Agbambilla Ziyerley Maxwell, has reported that 15 lives have been lost in the recent Bawku conflict.

On Sunday, October 27, 2024, a new attack occurred as assailants set up roadblocks in Gbimsi and Walewale.

They stopped vehicles to identify potential targets and shot them.

Initial reports suggested eight persons were killed, but the Bawku Naaba’s lawyer pegs the death toll at 15.

Speaking on Monday, October 28, 2024, Mr. Agbambilla stated, “As far as I know, we have currently lost a minimum of 15 people in Bawku, and some are being slaughtered in Walewale.”

He emphasised that the Attorney-General should have acted quickly to issue a new arrest warrant for Alhaji Seidu Abagre.

Abagre has been in exile since his installation as a rival chief in February 2023.

However, he recently returned to Bawku following a ruling by the Kumasi High Court, which quashed his arrest warrant on October 17, 2024.

This situation raises serious concerns about the lack of legal action against an individual involved in ongoing tensions in the region.

He indicated that the Attorney-General’s failure to act may undermine efforts to restore peace and stability in Bawku, especially given the sensitive nature of the conflict surrounding rival chieftains.

“We were told that the Attorney-General didn’t even put in a response, so the court had no choice but to revoke his (Alhaji Seidu Abagre’s) arrest warrant.”

He added that, “The Attorney-General simply could have issued another arrest warrant, but they didn’t do that”.

“The Bawku Naaba is not happy about the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre,” Mr. Agbambilla said in an interview with Joy News on October 28.
