‘I’m not stepping down as independent candidate’ – Suhum MP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Suhum, Kwadjo Asante, has denied reports claiming he has withdrawn from the 2024 parliamentary election as an independent candidate.

Rumours of him rescinding his decision to contest the Suhum Constituency seat as an independent candidate went viral after a picture of him and Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markins went viral moments after the Speaker of Parliament indefinitely adjourned sitting on October 23, 2024.

In an interview, Mr. Asante emphasised that he remains fully committed to contesting as an independent candidate.

“I have not withdrawn my independent candidature,” he said on Onua TV.

Mr. Asante opted to go independent following unresolved internal disagreements in the NPP.

He is one of four MPs whose seats have been declared vacant by the Speaker of Parliament per Article 97, following a decision to switch political allegiances ahead of the December 7 polls.

The Supreme Court has since directed Parliament to suspend the implementation of the Speaker’s declaration.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for Agona West, Cynthia Maamle Morrison, has also debunked claims that she is reconsidering her decision to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming December 7 general elections.
