Ghana has been struggling since 2018 -Otto Addo

Black Stars head coach has admitted that Ghana was lucky to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup at the expense of Nigeria.

He said this in an interview after Ghana lost 2-0 to Sudan in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers in Libya; the loss all but confirmed Ghana’s inability to qualify to the 2025 AFCON to be held in Morocco.

Ghana needs to win games against Angola and Niger in November and hope Sudan loses games against Angola and Niger to progress to next year’s AFCON.

After stating that Ghana’s loss to Sudan was a “hard pill” to swallow, Otto Addo confessed that Ghana has been struggling since missing out on qualifying to the 2018 World Cup and added that the Black Stars qualification to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar was a lucky feat.

“In all, if you look at the last years since not qualifying for the World Cup in 2018, we’ve been struggling as a country for a long time. We were lucky to qualify in 2022. We have the players who can play good football and combine it with our passion…we can go forward even in this our very bitter situation we are in now.”

“To be honest the last two days, I was dead (after Ghana’s loss to Sudan)…very important for us to think ahead now and try as much as possible to win the last games.

Ghana drew goalless with Nigeria in Kumasi and registered a 1-1 draw in the return leg in Abuja to qualify for the 2022 World Cup courtesy of the away goal rule. Ghana got knocked out at the group stage of the 2022 World Cup.
