2020 primaries: Be “sensible”- Akufo-Addo to NPP members
President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo has charged members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to be decorous and rational during the presidential and parliamentary primaries of the party slated for April 25, 2020.
Mr Akufo-Addo entreated party members to desist from the conflicts and violence that has characterised previous primaries and ensure that the upcoming one is devoid of internal skirmishes.
Speaking at the National Delegates Conference of the party at the Ghana International Trade Fair Centre in La, Accra, on Sunday, Mr Akufo-Addo stated: “In April, we are going to select our candidates in constituencies where we have Members of Parliament. This process must go on in a sensible, peaceful and serene manner”.
“The whole country will be looking at us. We are the party in government. We shouldn’t go and do this exercise with a lot of fighting, backbiting unnecessarily,” he said.
More than 6000 members of the party converged on the venue from all the 16 regions of the nation.
To drum home his point, the President said the will of the party should overrule all matters arguing that the NPP “is bigger than every single one of us, including me. This party is over 70 years old and we’ve been through a lot”.
The conference was on the theme: We have performed better, four more to do more”.
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, representatives of other parties including the biggest opposition the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and other officials were present at the programme.
