The Speaker of Parliament, Alban S.K. Bagbin, has extolled the achievements of the 8th Parliament, as their term careens into its final period.

For him, despite challenges, many Ghanaians believe that the unique composition and leadership of the 8th Parliament curtailed the government’s tendency to make harmful decisions.

In a Facebook post on Monday, October 14, 2024, Mr Bagbin noted that the 8th Parliament “introduced new Standing Orders and reforms that modernised its procedures, streamlined debates, and enhanced legislative oversight, making the House more efficient and responsive to the needs of citizens.”

He added that the 8th Parliament took a firm stand against several controversial policies and actions of the Nana Addo-led government, “notably the contentious e-levy debate and the strong opposition to LGBTQ rights.”

Mr Bagbin also highlighted that Tuesday, October 15, 2024, marks the beginning of the final session of the historic 8th Parliament, often referred to as a “hung Parliament,” due to its balanced composition.

The 8th Parliament as seen significant political decisions, including the reshuffle of leadership on both the Majority and Minority sides.
