20 illegal miners arrested at New Abirem

In a bold move to combat illegal mining, the Kotoku Environmental Task Force has arrested 20 suspected galamsey operators in New Abirem, Eastern Region.

The suspects, comprising 18 Ghanaians and 2 Chinese nationals, were caught red-handed at mining sites in Abirem Roman Missionary House Down on Saturday, October 12, 2024.

The task force retrieved two excavators, mining equipment, and two pumping machines during the special operation.

This significant haul underscores the severity of the illegal mining problem in the region.

The 20 suspects are currently in police custody, awaiting further investigation and prosecution.

This crackdown is part of Ghana’s ongoing efforts to curb illegal mining, which has devastating environmental and social consequences.

The government has been intensifying its fight against galamsey, with previous operations resulting in significant arrests and seizures of galamsey equipment.
