Consider yourself sacked if you join anti-galamsey strike — GMet to staff
The Chairman of the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), Isaac Amoo, has warned the agency’s staff against participating in the strike action by organised labour scheduled to begin on October 10.
At a staff meeting on Wednesday, October 9, Mr Amoo informed the workers that GMet’s role in safeguarding the country is critical; hence, the need to avoid the strike.
“GMET is part of the essential services of this country. So, on behalf of the board and leadership of this agency, I want to announce to you that GMet does not approve any of its workers to join the nationwide strike, and any worker who will flout the directive should consider himself or herself as having terminated his or her appointment,” he stated.
Speaking on a Kumasi-based FM station, he said organised labour’s industrial action is a national issue and is of no concern to GIHOC.
“I hope the GIHOC staff are listening. Anyone who joins the strike will be sacked. Go to organised labour for your salary. I am saying this on authority, there are labour laws in Ghana. The issue is a national issue and not that of GIHOC’s. So if you like, follow them and see. They should not even waste our time,” he warned.
Organised labour has declared a nationwide strike to demand an outright ban on all forms of illegal mining to end the negative impact on the environment.
The industrial action takes effect from Thursday, October 10, 2024.
This comes after the expiration of the September 30 deadline given to President Nana Akufo-Addo to declare a state of emergency over illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
