The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has stated that it supports organised labour in the fight against illegal mining, known as galamsey.

However, GMA will not participate in the nationwide strike effective October 10.

In a press release dated October 8, the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) clarified that it has not established a roadmap for any industrial action following an internal meeting.

The statement, signed by GMA President Dr. Frank Serebour, underscored the association’s commitment to uninterrupted healthcare services.

He emphasized that all members are expected to continue providing full medical services to the public, ensuring that patient care remains a top priority during this period.

The GMA stands firm in its solidarity with efforts to combat illegal small-scale mining, but its focus remains on maintaining essential medical operations.

GMA further expressed solidarity with the broader concerns raised by organised labour regarding the devastating effects of galamsey on the environment and livelihoods.

The association also acknowledged the importance of a unified effort to combat illegal mining but reaffirmed its decision for members to be at post.

The release said the GMA National Executive Council (NEC) will keep members informed of any further developments as necessary.

Meanwhile, organised labour remains determined to press on with the strike, aiming to pressure the government to implement robust measures against illegal mining activities.
