The Coalition of Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey has begun a three-day demonstration to raise awareness about the massive environmental destruction caused by illegal mining(galamsey).
The protesters also intend to submit a petition to Parliament to demand the release of 53 persons arrested during the Democracy Hub demonstration on September 22, 2024, over the same illegal mining issues.
They are also calling for stronger action against illegal mining. 
Protesters will march from Okponglo, along the Association International School to Kawukudi Junction, before proceeding to the Parliament House.
The protesters, clad in red t-shirts and gear, held placards with inscriptions such as: “#FreeTheCitizens” and “#SayNoToGalamsey.”
The police are with the team, providing adequate security to prevent chaos or damage to properties.
Noble Amedowu, one of the lawyers representing the activists, said, “The demonstration will start from Okponglo through Association International to Kawukudi Junction to Parliament House, where we will present a petition to Parliament and also present another petition to the Land’s Commission and the AG.
“There will be another demonstration on the second day. On the third day, there will be a night vigil, where the group will display the devastating effect of galamsey on the environment, especially on the Pra, Ankobra and Birim Rivers”.
It will be recalled that earlier this week, police approved the protest route, which included Legon Stadium, Okponglo Traffic Light, Shiashie, Airport Traffic Light, National Service Secretariat, Ridge Hospital, AU Roundabout and Parliament before concluding at the Independence Square.
