‘It’s recreational’ – Darkovibes on why some artistes smoke ‘weed’

Ghanaian musician Paul Nii Amu Andrew Darko known as Darkovibes, has explained why himself and some artistes smoke marijuana known as ‘weed’ ahead of performing at events or during recording sessions.

Speaking on 3FM Drive, Tuesday, October 1, 2024 Darkovibes said although he is an advocate of ‘weed’, he prefers not possessing the substance when in town.

Darkovibes mentioned that they smoke ‘weed’ only to cool their brains especially when they have had long recording sessions or have to perform at concerts for a longer period.

“We don’t walk around with stuffs like that. Its recreational, if we are singing and recording songs then we use it to cool our brains because sometimes we sing for the whole day, 24 hours or 48 hours. So, it’s just to cool the brains a bit,” Darkovibes stated.

According to him, despite not possessing the substance when in town, he allows authorities to conduct a search on him because he believes it’s the right thing to do.

“It was those days that I walk around with it and was arrested and I said I’m an advocate but that does not mean we should do anything anyhow with it,” he told Giovani Caleb.

Currently, Ghana has legalized the Narcotics Control Commission Act 2020 (Act 1019) which allows for cultivation of cannabis or weed for medical and industrial purposes.

Darkovibes is currently promoting his six-track EP, ‘Intercontinental’. The artiste features Richkid and Fadlan on one of the songs on the EP, ‘Bie Esor’.

‘Wi-Fi’, ‘Bend your knees’, ‘Bie Esor’, ‘Run With My heart’, ‘Missionary’ and ‘Stage’ are the songs on the project which was released on Friday, September 27.

Speaking about the EP in an interview on 3FM Drive, Darkovibes explained that the inspiration is to blend different cultures he’s experienced on this new project.

“For a long time now, we have been trying to push the Ghanaian music into different demographics, into the diasporan market and stuff like that and on this quest I have been travelling and exploring, working with different producers, different artistes, songwriters and stuff like that and I felt like I should put it in a body of work so that one day when I’m thinking about all the things that I have done, this project, I will remember exactly what state of mind I was in before I did it,” he noted.
