There was tension at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Accra when a passenger’s luggage began emitting smoke in the Terminal 3 departure hall.
The incident is said to have occurred on Sunday, September 22, at approximately 3:27 p.m.
Management of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) who confirmed this in a press statement said the luggage was located in the baggage wrap area, prompting immediate action from the Operations Room of the Aviation Security Department.
The security team swiftly isolated the bag, and passengers in the terminal were evacuated per the GACL’s Emergency Operations procedures.
The passenger whose luggage caused the disruption was identified and handed to the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) for questioning.
The GACL highlighted the importance of adhering to International Civil Aviation Regulations, reminding passengers that travelling with batteries is strictly prohibited.
Luggage containing prohibited items, including batteries, will be confiscated, and the owner handed over to authorities.
The GACL management expressed gratitude to passengers in the departure hall for their cooperation during the evacuation, emphasising that passenger safety remains their top priority. Normal operations at the terminal have since resumed.
