UGSRC overturns Guru’s disqualification from SRC Presidential Elections
In a dramatic turn of events, the University of Ghana Appeals Board has unanimously overturned the disqualification of musician Maradona Adjei Yeboah, popularly known as Guru, and Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah from the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) presidential election.
Initially, the SRC had disqualified Guru, citing that he did not meet the necessary qualifications to contest the position.
After a legal tussle, the judicial board confirmed that the grounds for the disqualification were legitimate. As such the musician could not contest in the election.
However, in a letter dated September 15, the Vice Dean instructed that the names of the two candidates and their respective running mates be included in the list of presidential candidates.
“You are further, directed to carry out the balloting for all the SRC candidates vetted by the vetting committee on Monday (September 16, 2024), between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon at the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs (ODSA).”
“You are to immediately communicate this to all the candidates to assemble at the premises of the ODSA for the balloting, “ the September 15 letter read.
The letter also directed the school’s Electoral Commission to provide the list of candidates and their positions to the University of Ghana’s Computer Services (UGCS) after balloting.
“This is to enable the UGCS to make the necessary preparations for voting to take place on a date to be agreed with candidates (before or after the balloting) but the date so agreed should not be later than Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2024,” the letter added.
This reversal allows Guru and Amponsah to contest in the SRC presidential election, marking a significant development in the university’s student politics.
