The Electoral Commission (EC) has scheduled Tuesday, September 17, to determine the eligibility of presidential and parliamentary candidates who have filed to contest in the 2024 General Elections.
According to the Deputy Commissioner in charge of Operations, Samuel Tetteh, the commission would announce only the names of those who were successful.
“Within the next two days, that is after Saturday when we have actually seen all the numbers. Maybe Sunday or Monday, we should be able to know all those who qualified for the next aspect which is balloting for positions on the presidential ballot paper,” he said.
Meanwhile, he said EC has started writing to presidential candidates who have errors in their forms, requesting correction as required by law.
The commission established two committees to vet the nomination forms of the various aspirants and the process is far advanced.
EC opened the nomination process from Monday, September 9, to Friday, September 13, 2024.
Meanwhile, a total of 22 presidential aspirants successfully submitted their forms, while two others await the EC’s decision after filing late.
Among the political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has nominated Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as its candidate.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is fielding former President John Dramani Mahama.
Other notable candidates include Kofi Akpaloo of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Christian Kwabena Andrews of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), and Dr Hassan Ayariga of the All People’s Congress (APC).
Other parties who filed are Alhaji Mohammed Frimpong of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Akua Donkor of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), and Nana Akosua Frimpongmaa Sarpong Kumankumah of the Convention People’s Party (CPP).
Bernard Mornah represents the People’s National Convention (PNC), while Dr. Daniel Augustus Lartey represents the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP).
The election will also see 11 independent candidates, including Alan Kyeremanten.
Other independent candidates are Nana Kwame Bediako, Samuel Appiah Danquah, George Twum Barima, Kofi Koranteng, Desmond Abrefa, Nana Stephens, Elder Paul Perkoh, James Kwasi Oppong, John Kpikpi, Dr. Sam Ankrah, and Janet Asana Nabla.
However, Dr Nii Amu Darko (independent) and Kofi Asamoah Siaw of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), who filed their nominations after the 5 pm deadline on Friday, are awaiting the EC’s decision on the status of their nominations.
