Chairman and aspiring flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), David Apasera, has rejected the results from the 2024 PNC National Congress, held to elect its national executives ahead of the December 7 polls.

This comes after officials from the Electoral Commission (EC) declared Bernard Mornah as the flagbearer for the party.

Mr Mornah garnered 1,138 votes, defeating his challenger, David Apasera, who managed to secure 216 votes.

At a press conference in Accra on Sunday, September 8, David Apasera accused the EC of conducting a fraudulent and biased election.

According to him, Bernard Mornah and the EC conspired to undermine his candidacy and hinted at legal action to challenge the election results.

“For all intents and purposes, yesterday’s purported election was fraudulent, lopsided and can never be free and fair. I am aware that Article 55 (4) of the 1992 constitution requires political parties to have a national calendar. This means that a political party cannot conduct elections and have the EC declare the said election when other regions had not participated at all in such an election.

“Yes, Western region didn’t vote at all, Western region didn’t vote at all they had gone home, Northern region didn’t vote at all, they had gone home, and I understand several too they didn’t vote. Now it is a very sad thing that we will have this nature, the EC will do what they have done,” he said.

The PNC congress, which was initially scheduled to start at 9 am, faced delays due to an injunction filed from David Apasera’s camp.

However, the party managed to resolve the dispute, allowing the congress to proceed smoothly.

Mr Mornah, known for his activism, will face over 20 other presidential candidates including the governing NPP Flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and NDC Flagbearer John Dramani Mahama in the December 2024 elections.

Prior to the election, Mr Mornah explained that his decision to become President is borne out of the increasing number of Ghanaians who have expressed belief in his ability to provide the required leadership to develop the country.

“The increasing number of people from all corners of the country: the aged, women, people with disability but more importantly the youth have been calling and waiting for my declaration so that they will commence mobilisation of both resources and votes for the project,” he said.

He said what was required to lift the country and the African continent from the unacceptable levels of deprivation was a courageous leader of character and mettle to be able to stand up and take control of the resources of the continent and nation for the benefit of the people.
