Our main challenge in the creative industry is funding – KOD
Ghanaian media personality and fashion icon, Kofi Okyere Darko usually referred to as KOD has bemoaned the inadequate funding for the creative arts sector.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 3Entertainment Creative Arts Forum, KOD opined that with more funding from either private entities or government, the industry would be elevated to higher heights.
“The major challenge facing the creative industry or the orange economy in this country is that of funding. If we are able to put some funds into what we do, I think it will elevate it to the next level.
“People are asking why Ghana is not producing movies like we did back in the day, executive producers are struggling. So if there’s funding from the private sector, working hand-in-hand with the government, we are definitely going to propel what we do to greater height,” he stated.
During an interaction with members of the creative arts sector on Friday, June 7, he assured the sector of improvement if he assumes office as the next president
”Nkrumah believed in creative arts and he put money in the creative arts and I believe that government must put money into the creative arts,” he stated.
The New Force Movement with its founder and leader, Nana Kwame Bediako has also underscored the need for an ultra-modern film studio to be built in Ghana.
“We need to build a world class studio. Ghana is the Blackstar of Africa. This studio needs to be in Ghana. We need to build that studio, that Hollywood type studio, that Tyler Perry studio type – and that is what is going to attract the market from other countries. It’s going to boost tourism, it’s gonna bring people from South Africa, Nigeria, England, Europe, America to come here and make their movies, and do their productions,” he said during his policy launch on September 1.
