The Kyebi Akwansrah Hene of Nsawam was nearly lynched following accusations that he orchestrated a shooting at the Anum Apapam South electoral area.
The community members attacked the Kyebi Akwansrah Hene over the weekend, accusing him of causing the death of a resident.
The chief was stripped naked and physically assaulted after attempts to shoot at him failed, with reports suggesting that bullets did not penetrate his body.
The police intervened to stop further attacks and have taken over the investigation into the matter.
The youth in the area were reportedly infuriated by the chief’s actions, also accusing him of bringing in suspected landguards to terrorize the community.
Tensions had been running high in the area after the burial of a chief, with traditional leaders attempting to enstool a new chief.
According to the assemblyman for Anum Apapam, Takyi Ebenezer, the conflict intensified during the traditional rites meant to replace the recently deceased chief.
He said traditional leaders were in the process of conducting the ceremony when an opposing faction disrupted the proceedings.
“There was tension everywhere, with gunshots all over the place. Traders who came to trade had to flee for their lives,” he said.
