The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, has clarified his comments that suggested that former President John Dramani Mahama was an alcoholic.
This follows allegations that Mr. Atta Akyea labelled Mr Mahama an alcoholic during a mini-rally on Tuesday, August 27, 2024.
He had said that, “Ghana is fortunate to have an economist who is composed, knowledgeable, and abstains from alcohol. We are truly blessed. Ghana is on the verge of having a president with wisdom, a leader who is astute and refrains from drinking alcohol”.
Speaking on Friday, he stated that his comments were solely focused on the credentials of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and did not include any reference to John Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer.
“I wanted to say that when we are having a crisis as a nation and it is economic in nature then God has helped us [because] we have a Moses who is an expert in economics. So Ghana is going to have for the first time an economist as a president to solve the economic problems that we are complaining about.

“He is not only an economist. He is a very decent man…I also respect his discipline he is not only an economist but he doesn’t drink alcohol. This is all that I said,” he explained.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Youth Wing has thrown its weight behind Mr Atta Akyea.
“We support Hon. Samuel Atta Akyea on his remark that John Dramani Mahama is a drunkard,” Salam Mustapha, National Youth Organizer of the NPP said.
The NPP youth argue that the NDC has no moral high ground, citing previous disparaging remarks made by top NDC officials.
