The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized the Akufo-Addo administration for the state of Ghana’s economy.

At the NDC manifesto launch at the University of Education, Winneba, Mr Nketia highlighted the negative effects of government policies, including the introduction of numerous taxes and the protests by pensioners demanding their due payments.

The NDC stalwart described the economic situation as the worst in Ghana’s history, with new terms like “haircuts” and “domestic debt restructuring” emerging.

He assured that the NDC’s manifesto provides actionable solutions to address these challenges.

On his part, the NDC General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey accused the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration of damaging a strong economy inherited from the NDC.

“When we were leaving office in 2016, we delivered to our friends in the NPP a sound economy that was marked by sustainable public debt, with a debt-to-GDP ratio that stood at 55.6 per cent.

“There was also a stable credit rating of B-, a low budget deficit of 6.1 percent, and a declining inflation rate that stood around 15 per cent. We handed over to them a very strong manufacturing sector, two massive oil fields and a cocoa sector that was thriving,” he recounted.

Among other things, the NDC in its manifesto has promised to remove taxes on essential medical supplies for dialysis and establish a Cancer and Kidney Disease Trust Fund to support afflicted Ghanaians who need assistance to treat such conditions.

Additionally, the NDC has promised to scrap the quota system for admissions into nursing and teacher training colleges to expand students’ enrollment.

The opposition party also announced that it would construct a potable water system for the people of Yendi and upgrade the Yendi Hospital to improve healthcare services and
reduce long-distance travel for medical care.
