Ghana FA pays tribute to Junior Agogo on fifth anniversary of his passing

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has commemorated the fifth anniversary of the late Black Stars striker Junior Manuel Agogo’s passing with a heartfelt tribute.

In a moving message shared on X (formerly Twitter), the GFA honoured Agogo’s legacy, declaring that Ghanaians will always cherish his memory.

“Honoring a legend! Today marks 5 years since we lost Junior Agogo. Thank you for all the unforgettable memories! Always in our hearts. Always a Black Star,” the GFA posted.

Agogo, who passed away on August 22, 2019, at age 40 in London, had been battling the aftermath of a stroke for several years. His death came shortly after he celebrated his milestone birthday.

During his career, Agogo significantly impacted as a forward, starting with Sheffield Wednesday in the Premier League. He scored over 100 goals throughout his career, with a standout period at Bristol Rovers, where he scored 45 goals in 140 appearances from 2003 to 2006.

He was also instrumental in Nottingham Forest’s promotion from League One in the 2007/2008 season, finishing as the team’s top scorer.

Agogo’s influence extended to the international scene, where he gained popularity playing for Ghana’s Black Stars. He scored 12 goals in 27 matches for the national team, with memorable performances in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.

After retiring from football, Agogo suffered a stroke in December 2014 and spent two months in the hospital. He later opened up about his struggles with speech and confidence in a 2017 BBC Four documentary, “Speechless.” Despite his challenges, he was widely admired for his resilience and determination in his recovery.
