GJA to open book of condolence for the late Godwin Avenorgbo

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) will open a Book of Condolence in memory of the late broadcaster, Godwin Avenorgbo, from Monday, August 26, 2024,

The Book of Condolence will be available at the Ghana International Press Centre from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, for 10 days.

GJA made this announcement in a press statement dated August 21, 2024, and signed by the General Secretary, Mr Kofi Yeboah.

The death of Godwin Avenorgbo, popularly known as ‘The Grandmaster’  was announced to the public on Monday, August 19, 2024, by his former employer, the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).

Before his demise, Mr. Avenorgbo played a pivotal role during the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) 75th Anniversary Commemorative Lecture held at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra on Thursday, August 15, 2024.

He was the Chairman of the Anniversary Planning Committee.

His death is a big blow to the GJA and the entire media fraternity in Ghana.

GJA in the statement explained that “Mr Avenorgbo, popularly known as ‘The Grandmaster’, was rushed to hospital from home after a sudden illness but he was pronounced dead on arrival”.

“The death of ‘Big G’ came as a big shock to the GJA and the entire media fraternity in Ghana, and there has been an outpouring of tributes in his memory”, the press release added

“The National Executive of the GJA, led by the Vice President, Mrs Linda Asante Agyei, visited the residence of the late renowned broadcaster at the Regimanuel Estates near Accra, on Tuesday, to commiserate with the family”.

The statement further noted, “His sudden death is a huge loss to the GJA and the nation as a whole, and we are yet to come to terms with that reality; indeed, we are still shocked!”.
