Police officer sues IGP and AG over delayed promotion

An Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Oscar Amevenku has filed a suit against the Ghana Police Service, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Attorney General.

The officer claims he has been unfairly denied a promotion despite meeting all necessary criteria.

ACP Amevenku argued that he has been overlooked for promotion to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) since January 2022, despite having served for over four years at his current rank.

He alleged that several of his junior colleagues have since been promoted, leaving him behind without any valid explanation.

In the lawsuit, filed on July 30, ACP Amevenku requested the Accra High Court to compel the Ghana Police Service to promote him retroactively from January 1, 2022.

He is also seeking restoration of his seniority over current DCOPs who were previously his juniors, as well as payment of all entitlements due at the higher rank.

The officer claims that his petitions to the Police Council and other authorities have gone unanswered, leaving him with no choice but to seek redress through the courts.
