The three teacher unions who announced their intention to embark on a nationwide strike over denied allowances have rescinded their decision.
The unions are the Senior Staff Association-Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Federation of Senior Staff Associations of Ghana (FUSSAG), and the Teachers and Educational Workers Union of the Trade Union Congress (TEWU-TUC).
In a statement issued on August 5, 2024, the teacher unions raised concerns over the Finance Ministry’s delay in issuing a letter to effect the payment of the Vehicle Maintenance Allowance (VMA) and other related allowances.
They emphasized the urgency of the situation and highlighted their frustration with the government’s inaction.
The unions accused the government of employing cunning tactics to deny them their rightful dues.
They stressed that their patience had worn thin and that they were prepared to take necessary action to ensure their demands were met.
However, a statement issued by the unions has announced that the intended strike has been called off.
This followed the government’s intervention to extend the upward adjustment in the vehicle maintenance allowance to their members.
They commended the government’s commitment to addressing their concerns and acknowledged that the restoration of the VMA is a sign of willingness to resolve all outstanding issues.
“However, we would like to appeal to the government to extend this adjustment to all categories of Senior Staff of Public Universities in Ghana without the eligibility clause,” the statement said.
