The Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has petitioned the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to recall the House following an indefinite adjournment.
On Tuesday, July 30, the Speaker abruptly adjourned the session, leaving several government businesses unresolved.
This angered the Majority Caucus who accused him of prioritizing international travels over Parliamentary business.
In a letter dated July 31, 2024, the Majority Leader said the House needed to sit to facilitate the discussion of critical government matters.
These include the motion on the Financing Agreement between the Government of Ghana and the International Development Association, requests for Tax Exemptions for designated beneficiaries under the One District, One Factory Programme, the Ghana Financial Stability Fund, and certain bills.
“Mr Speaker will recall that Parliament adjourned sine die on Tuesday, 30 July 2014, at which time the aforementioned items had been duly advertised and scheduled for consideration. The urgency of these matters necessitates our reconvening to fulfil our constitutional mandate and serve the interests of the Ghanaian people.
“In the exercise of our rights as Members of Parliament, we respectfully urge you to summon Parliament for an extraordinary session within the stipulated seven-day period,” the letter said.
It will be recalled that in May 2024, the Majority Leader requested for the reconvening of parliament to address the adoption of the Thirty-Fourth Report of the Appointments Committee and a motion on additional financing.
This was after Speaker Alban Bagbin shocked MPs by adjourning the House sine die on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.
