A demonstration at La in the Greater Accra Region, turned chaotic as organisers clashed with the police.

The organisers included various unions and associations within the La Traditional Area.

The Tuesday protest was against the alleged unethical seizure of lands by political forces in the Greater Accra Region.

They were particular about the Trade Fair lands, which include areas occupied by Labadi Beach Hotel and La Palm Royal Beach Hotel and the Ghana Prisons Service lands at Cantonments.

According to the protestors, the lands were taken without due compensation to the original owners.

They, therefore, demanded the return of state lands, which they claim is being shared among politicians.

A disagreement with the police, however, arose when the protestors decided to use a certain route.

The police objected to the change of route, insisting they could not guarantee the safety of protesters if they marched to Kpletso, near Burma Camp.

This escalated into a heated argument between the police and the La residents.

Speaking to the media, the leader of the protestors said they did not intend to use the Kpletso route as the police claimed.

“We are not going to the Kpletso land; the police are behaving like cowards. They don’t want to encounter the military.

“We are not people who run away from anything. The commander knows me, and I’m not somebody who is running away. Come for me if you think we’ve done something untoward. But don’t try to suppress us,” he said.

He accused the police of having refused to provide security for the protest from the beginning.

He added that as law-abiding citizens, they were forced to provide their own security and promised to hold themselves accountable if anything went wrong.
