Blazing chaos: The unwelcome visitors in Ghana’s SHSs

Source The Ghana Report

Fire outbreaks in Senior High Schools (SHSs) nationwide are increasingly common.

Over the past few years, news headlines have been dominated by these fire incidents, particularly in dormitories and hostels, causing panic among parents and guardians.

The nation has recorded over 15 such incidents in just two years.

In these dormitory fires, students have sustained injuries and many have been left traumatised by these incidents.

The fires also disrupted academic activities in the affected schools as they were forced to shut down for long periods until the destroyed dormitories were renovated.

The renovations and replacement of items lost in these fires cost thousands of Ghana cedis.

Although no particular cause has been established in all these outbreaks, preliminary observations point to electrical faults, candles, mosquito coils, and arson, among others.

More worrying is the students’ seeming lack of the knowledge and tools to contain the flames before they escalate into full-blown infernos.

During one such outbreak at Wa SEC TECH, the Deputy Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS),  Upper West Region, DOI Eugene Asa-Gyekye, complained about the unavailability of fire extinguishers and fire hydrants on the premises.

He also raised concerns about the design and construction of some storey buildings in some SHSs, saying there were no provision for adequate staircases for easy escape in times of emergency.

Fortunately, no life has been lost, mainly due to the times the fires occur. Most of the fires happened when the students were in the classrooms or still awake in the dormitories.

But one could wonder, what if the next fire outbreak happens at the wrong time?

Here, The Ghana Report highlights 14 SHSs whose dormitories have been gutted by fire from 2022 to date.
