Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Agoagyiri Frank Annoh-Dompreh has been fined over contempt charges.

The legislator was hauled before the Accra High Court presided by Justice Abena Oppong Adjin-Doku.

He was convicted after he pleaded guilty to contempt charges.

The MP was cited for contempt after it was brought to the attention of the High Court (Land Court 1) that he disrupted a court bailiff and police officers who had gone to execute an order on a disputed land.

In her ruling on Tuesday, July 23, the judge said the Member of Parliament is not an ordinary member of society, stressing that he should know better.

“Being a Member of Parliament and a Chief Whip for that matter, the respondent is expected to lead by example. The conduct of the respondent is indeed reprehensible and ought not to be rewarded by just caution.

“Indeed, it is a conduct deserving of a custodial sentence, but the court would spare him a custodial sentence in light of the settlement he has reached with the applicant and the good faith he has shown after his reprehensible conduct,” the judge said.

The court however imposed a fine of 600 penalty units, equivalent to GH¢7,200, instead of a custodial sentence.

This is not the first time a lawmaker has been cited for contempt.

A former Member of Parliament for Madina, Amadu Bukari Sorogho was ordered to pay a fine of GH¢30,000, for contempt.

In his case, he flouted a court order restraining him from building on land situated at the Madina Estate, opposite the Magistrate Court.
