30-year-old man drowns in River Akora

A 30-year-old man, identified only as Joe has drowned in the River Akora at Gomoa Ekwamkrom in the Central Region.

Joe was reportedly swimming with his girlfriend on Friday, July 5, 2024, when he suddenly disappeared underwater.

Despite immediate calls for help and rescue efforts by community members, Joe could not be saved.

The traditional leaders and several residents including divers continued the search through the weekend but made no progress.

However, his body was found in Gomoa Brofoyedu, a community near Gomoa Ekwamkrom, on Monday, July 8, after fetish priests performed rituals at the bank of River Akora.

The body has since been conveyed to Agona Swedru Hospital Mortuary for preservation, while the police have begun investigations.

In June 2023, two children reportedly drowned in the Akora River in the Agona West Municipality of the Central Region.

The victims, Abdul Rahman, an eight-year-old boy, and Fatao, an 11-year-old met their untimely death after they had gone for afternoon prayers.

An aunt of the deceased Fatimatu Abdullah revealed that they were at home when they received the distressing news that their children had drowned in the Akora River.

Despite making every effort to retrieve the children, their attempts proved unsuccessful.

Overwhelmed by grief and desperate for any solution, the family turned to the Chief Priest of Agona Swedru to perform rituals to find the bodies.
