The Public Service Workers Union (PSWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana, National Identification Authority (NIA) Division, has called on President Nana Akufo-Addo to remove the NIA Executive Secretary, Professor Kenneth Attafuah.

A petition dated July 1 and signed by 920 NIA staff members cited a complete loss of trust in Mr Attafuah’s leadership due to unfair labour practices.

“The staff and union’s decision to petition your high office for the removal of Professor Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah is grounded on unfair labour practices contrary to the labour laws and Human Resource Manual and Policy Framework for Ghana Public Services, violations of SSNIT law, poor corporate governance structure, selective and administrative injustice in the recruitment, placement and promotion of staff, and lack of innovative ideas to manage the administration of the authority,” the petition read.

The staff added that his continuous stay in office could lead to further harm and reputational damage to the NIA.

“His staff have absolutely lost trust in his administration and can no longer work with him in confidence. These, coupled with infractions in the labour laws and SSNIT Acts, are enough justifications for his immediate removal from the office without further delays,” the petition added.

Further, the petitioners said that his removal from the office would restore confidence among the working staff and reignite the authority’s reputation.

This comes after the group embarked on a strike in June 2024.

In a statement dated June 9, 2024, the group said the action was taken because the government failed to provide better conditions of service for NIA staff.

It also cited several factors, including the government’s failure to address undue delays in the negotiation process and the inability to grant institution-specific allowances to NIA staff.
