The Ghana Prison Service has interdicted three officers stationed at the Ejura Municipal Prison in the Ashanti Region who allegedly assaulted a 24-year-old civilian.
The unnamed officers are currently being investigated by the police for beating up Franklin Agyekum on June 4, 2024.
According to Chief Superintendent Tachie Adjei Kofi, Commander of the Ejura Municipal Prison, the victim has received medical care at both the Ejura Government Hospital and the Mampong Municipal Hospital.
An amateur video of the incident shows three men in prison uniforms and about six inmates dressed in their orange uniforms attacking a young man in a white shirt with sticks and other offensive objects.
According to Franklin Agyekum, the prison officers were transporting the inmates from Nkwanta to Ejura on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, when they nearly knocked him down with their tricycle.
He said he confronted one of the officers over his reckless driving, resulting in an argument.
The prison officer who got angered by Agyekum’s courage to challenge his driving pounced on him.
The other officers and the inmates also joined in assaulting the young man until he was injured and bleeding.
He narrated that some eyewitnesses helped him to report the incident to the police after his ordeal.
The police gave him a report and asked him to seek medical attention due to the heavy bleeding.
He subsequently went to the hospital for treatment and was discharged the following day.
Superintendent Tachie Adjei Kofi said the prison officers have shown remorse and have begun meeting with the victim’s family to offer an unqualified apology.
Chief Superintendent Tachie condemned the incident, describing it as unprofessional, and expressed hope that such incidents will not recur.
The victim’s father, Mr. Emmanuel Amoah, confirmed that his son is receiving medical attention and that the family is in talks with the commander and the officers.
He emphasized that his son deserves compensation for the trauma inflicted on him.
