The Divisional Executives Council of the Public Services Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana, National Identification Authority (NIA) Division, has called off its indefinite strike, which began on June 10, 2024.

The decision follows an agreement with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to meet with the NIA staff on Friday, June 14, 2024, to determine how best to address their concerns.

The suspension also follows a series of interventions from key stakeholders, including an appeal from the Minister for National Security and an invitation from the FWSC to return to the negotiation table. The advice from the mother union based on the recent ruling of the National Labour Commission also played a pivotal role in calling off the indefinite strike.

A statement released by the Divisional Executives Council on Wednesday, June 12, indicated that the FWSC had assured staff of their willingness to act in good faith in their subsequent engagements.

“However, this gesture will be put to the test on Friday, June 14, 2024. Members are therefore assured that, if at the close of negotiations on Friday, the government fails to demonstrate true faith by granting us Institution Specific Allowances, we would not be hesitant to return to our industrial action; this must be noted,” excerpts of the statement noted.

The executives in the statement also appealed to its members to report to work today, Thursday, June 13, 2024.

“We appreciate your unprecedented massive solidarity and compliance following the declaration of the strike action. The action has really made a tremendous impact. However, we anticipate favourable outcomes within the shortest possible time”.

“We appreciate your unprecedented massive solidarity and compliance following the declaration of the
strike action. The action has really made a tremendous impact. However, we anticipate favourable
outcomes within the shortest possible time.

“While we comply with the interventions from the mother union (PSWU), the National Security Ministry,
the National Labour Commission and the public outcry to stay put on hold the strike action, we throw a
word of caution to Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and government to demonstrate good faith as
we get back to the negotiation table in the interest of industrial harmony,” the statement added.
