Fisherman drowns at Mumford

A fisherman believed to be in his 30s has reportedly drowned at Mumford in the Gomoa West District of the Central Region.

The deceased, popularly known as Sofo, was with four others when the incident occurred.

According to reports, he was dragged into the sea when pulling the fishing net.

All attempts by his colleagues to rescue him proved futile, and his body is still missing.

The chief fisherman, Nana Kwamena Obo, confirmed the incident.

The fisherfolks who have been thrown into a state of mourning are still on a search for Sofo.

This comes after two fishermen reportedly drowned in a lagoon at Vui, a suburb of Keta in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region.

The Assembly Member for the area, Klu Wisdom Agbeko, stated that the fishermen, Kodzotsey Korbla Wemegah, 54, and Dzevenu Korshie Galley, 60, went fishing on Friday, May 24, 2024, and were expected to return early the next day.

However, they failed to return as usual, prompting a search for them.

They were subsequently found dead in the lagoon on Saturday, May 25.

Mr. Agbeko said that the body of  Kodzotsey Wemegah was discovered in the late hours of Saturday, while the second body was retrieved the following morning.

Also, an 8-year-old boy, identified as Baba Yakubu, drowned in the river called Adjei at the Nurses’ Quarters near Domeabra in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

According to reports, the boy went to the river with his 12-year-old elder brother and friends on Sunday, May 19, 2024, to swim but did not return home.

However, on Monday, May 20, 2024, a relative by the name of Moses Akpe said they received a distress call about a body floating in the river.

After retrieving the body with the help of some residents, they confirmed that it was the body of Baba Yakubu.
