(VIDEO) Prison officers and inmates brutalize civilian at Ejura

Some officers of the Ghana Prisons Service and inmates at the Ejura prison camp have allegedly assaulted a civilian in Ejura, Ashanti Region.

An amateur video of the incident shows three men in prison uniforms and about six inmates dressed in their orange uniforms attacking a young man in a white shirt with sticks and other objects.

According to the victim, who identified himself as Agyekum, the prison officers were transporting the inmates from Nkwanta to Ejura on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, when they nearly knocked him down with their tricycle.

He said he confronted one of the officers over his reckless driving leading to an argument.

The prison officer who got angered by Agyekum’s courage to challenge his driving pounced on him.

The two other officers and inmates also joined the officer in assaulting the young man further until he was injured and bleeding.

He narrated that some eyewitnesses helped him to report the incident to the police after his ordeal.

The police gave him a report and asked him to seek medical attention due to the heavy bleeding.

He subsequently went to the hospital for treatment and was discharged the following day.

Meanwhile, Chief Superintended Takyi Adjei Kofi, the commander of the Ejura Prisons Camp, said he is aware of the incident and has already reported to the head office.

He said he had already visited the victim’s family to commiserate with them and promised to take care of the victim’s hospital bills.

He added that he continues to interact with community members to calm tempers.

Chief Superintended Takyi also vehemently condemned the actions of his officers while assuring of further investigations and possible punishment.
