Gunshots fired at Sagnarigu voter registration centre

The voter registration exercise at Sagnarigu in the Northern Region has been marred by violence after gunshots rang out at the registration centre on Sunday, May 26, 2024.

This was due to a clash between members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The gunfire followed an argument over the eligibility of some persons who were carted to the registration centre in a vehicle to register for their voter ID cards.

While the argument was going on, a group of unidentified armed men stormed the venue and started firing gunshots sporadically.

There were, however, no casualties.

Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Organizer for the NDC, Abdallah A. Baba, has accused the NPP of masterminding the shooting.

He alleged that members of his party were conducting themselves peacefully at the centre when the gunmen appeared from the bush and opened fire.

According to him, some executive members of the NPP had met earlier to plan the chaos per his intel.

On the other hand, the NPP Chairman for the Sagnarigu constituency, Alhaji Musah Fuseini Dangoomah, has denied all the allegations.

He said the NPP was committed to a peaceful registration process.

Both parties have, however, called for a thorough investigation into the incident.

Twenty days into the exercise, several violent incidents, attempted double registration and alleged registration of minors have characterised the process.

This has led to the arrest of over 10 persons, including a member of parliament since the limited voter registration exercise began on May 7.

The exercise which was supposed to last for 21 days has since been extended to 23 days.

The Electoral Commission (EC) announced that the registration, initially set to conclude on May 27, will continue until Wednesday, May 29, 2024.
