An 8-year-old boy, identified as Baba Yakubu, drowned in the river called Adjei at the Nurses’ Quarters near Domeabra in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

Information gathered indicates that the boy went to the river with his 12-year-old elder brother and friends to swim on Sunday afternoon but did not return home.

However, on Monday, May 20, 2024, a relative by the name of Moses Akpe said they received a distress call about a body floating in the river the next day.

After retrieving the body with the help of some residents, they confirmed that it was the body of Baba Yakubu.

In a similar situation, a 5-year-old girl drowned in an abandoned illegal mining (galamsey) pit while playing with her friends at Manso Nkwanta in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region.

According to eyewitnesses, the children were playing when the girl accidentally fell into the abandoned galamsey pit, which was filled with water.

Sensing the danger, her friends immediately reported the incident to some community members, prompting a desperate search effort.

The youth of Manso Nkwanta visited the scene and launched a search that lasted several hours.

Despite their determined efforts, the search ended in sorrow, as they eventually found the girl’s lifeless body.

Also, on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, a four-year-old boy drowned in a well at Kwahu Tafo in the Eastern Region.

According to local sources, the young boy fetched water from the well with a bucket.

However, the volume of the water made the bucket heavy, and the weight pulled him into the well.

Again, on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, a nine-year-old boy died during crab hunting at Saltpond in the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region.

Information gathered indicates that Paa Kwesi and his three friends, all under 13, went to a marshy area on Tuesday morning to search for crabs.

While hunting for crab, they decided to swim in a river when they felt the weather was too hot.

However, Paa Kwesi never returned to the surface after jumping into the river.

After swimming for a while, the other three didn’t see Paa Kwesi; hence, they assumed he might have gone home, so they went back to hunt.

When they returned, they sent his slippers home, only to realize he was not home. They didn’t inform anyone about what had happened.

The mother of the deceased went to the police station, lodged a complaint, and proceeded to local radio stations and information centres to make announcements, but all proved futile.

They later had information that someone had drowned and had been found on a river bank at Mankessim Hinni. So they quickly rushed to the area, only to witness the lifeless body of the young boy on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, in the afternoon.
