Renowned legal practitioner, Justice Srem Sai, says he is not surprised by the petition filed by Martin Amidu seeking the removal of Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, from office.

According to him, any office set up to fight corruption must expect pushback; therefore, the recent development is expected.

“It did not come to me as a surprise that someone is seeking to remove the OSP from the office and that is from the background that any office which is set up to fight corruption, as we have casually put it on the street, corruption will fight back. I don’t think this is peculiar to the special prosecutor’s office but any other office that is set up to fight corruption should be ready to face some of these instances. So I’m not surprised that there’s a petition,” Mr Sai said.

Meanwhile, the Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, has written to the Special Prosecutor (SP), Kissi Agyebeng, for his response to a petition by his predecessor, Martin Amidu, seeking his removal.

The response by the Special Prosecutor, according to the letter from the Chief Justice dated Thursday (May 16, 2024), is to assist the Chief Justice in determining whether there is a prima facie case (case to answer) against Mr Agyebeng.

The petition, submitted by Martin Amidu, calls for President Akufo-Addo to remove Mr. Agyebeng from his position.

Dated April 30, 2024, the petition alleges procurement breaches in the purchase of vehicles for the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and accuses Mr. Agyebeng of misconduct involving judges and the administration of justice.

Mr. Amidu’s petition includes allegations of violations of citizens’ rights through arrests and detentions, breaches of the right to information, and improper appointment of personnel to the OSP.
