The Konongo District Police has arrested two suspects for assaulting firefighters at the Konongo Odumase Fire Station.
The suspects are Inusah Alhassan, also known as Zimbo, a 36-year-old illegal gold miner and a woman, only identified as Obaa Yaa.
This comes after some angry residents attacked six firefighters for allegedly arriving late to a fire emergency on Saturday, February 10, 2024.
While at a fire scene, the firefighters received another distress call and had to quickly return to Konongo since the only fire tender served several communities.
Upon arrival at the Konongo scene, the residents, unhappy about the delay, began pelting stones and other items at the fire crew.
The angry residents also damaged the fire tender. The police intervened to calm the situation.
This marked the second time they were attacked for arriving late to a fire emergency in the area.
Following calls from the Ghana National Fire Service(GNFS) to apprehend the perpetrators and a call to boycott all emergency services across the country, Obaa Yaa was arrested and later released on bail.
However, after weeks of investigations, police intelligence led to the arrest of Inusah on April 12.
He is currently in police custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Friday, April 19, 2024.
This comes after police in the Ashanti Region arrested five persons for allegedly assaulting fire officers responding to a fire outbreak at the Racecourse Market.
