Members of the Church of Pentecost at Asante Akyem Agogo in the Ashanti Region were left in shock after a 16-year-old girl allegedly stole a baby.

During service on Sunday, March 24, 2024, the suspect reportedly tricked the baby’s grandmother into handing over the baby.

She convinced the woman that she was sending the baby over to the mother on the same premises to breastfeed him.

However, she disappeared with the baby.

Upon a search, the distraught parents found that the suspect had taken the child to her family house in Agogo Zongo.

She told her family that the baby boy belonged to her.

The family, however, became suspicious of her claims as she had a history of mental health problems and was receiving treatment at a prayer camp in Ananekrom.

Her family immediately followed her to the prayer camp to confirm her claims, but they discovered she was lying.

They subsequently took the suspect and the baby to the police station, where she was detained.

The baby’s mother, who had already filed a complaint at the police station, was then called to verify whether the child belonged to her.

The police said the suspect was a chronic baby thief but were unable to convict her due to her mental health condition.

Meanwhile, the suspect and the baby’s grandmother are assisting the police with the investigation.

Seven months ago, another suspected baby thief escaped death by a whisker after she was beaten by an angry mob at Aboabo Extension in Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region.

The suspect, Auleta Mohammed, a resident of Abirem, was reportedly caught in possession of a boy of about two years old, whom she had stolen from the densely populated area.

The female suspect, believed to be in her early 20s, later confessed to being part of a group of young ladies who steal babies and sell them to a certain woman for a fee of GH¢50.
