President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has pledged to do his part to ensure free and fair elections in December 2024.

The president, on several occasions, has reiterated his commitment to ensuring that the December 7 general election is conducted in a free, fair, and peaceful environment.

He made this commitment again on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, during the State of the Nation Address in Parliament.

“The government on its part will do whatever it takes to ensure the reputation of the Electoral Commission is not damaged and the free will of the people is manifested at the end of the electoral process.

“I want to reassure the people of Ghana, that I will do everything in my power to help ensure the conduct of a transparent, free and fair elections on December 7,” he assured.

The president further stressed the need for collaborative efforts from all parties to ensure a violence-free election.

“A lot of responsibility lies on the Electoral Commission to put the organization in place to ensure that we have credible elections. The government is doing its part to make the work of the Electoral Commission go smoothly.

“A lot of responsibility lies on the political parties as well and I hope that the political parties recognize that their credibility is also on the line, especially some people wanting to undermine the multiparty democratic system of governance.

“It is up to the parties to demonstrate that competitive elections are honourable character-enhancing experiences and that, at the end of the process, the loser will congratulate the winner and the world does not come to an end because an election has been lost,” he said.

The president is convinced the upcoming elections will be peaceful and will serve as a reminder of the country’s reputation and further strengthen Ghana’s democratic rule.

He warned persons who may want to wreak havoc to desist from such practice since there will be no room to operate.

“The security agencies are well-prepared to deal with anyone or groups of persons who intend to cause any havoc,” he warned.
