The waste is simply too much – Prof. Baffuor Agyeman-Duah

A former Governance Advisor to the UN, Prof Baffuor Agyeman-Duah has queried the government over its large size. Speaking on Joy TV’s PM Express, he said, when we talk about the size of government, it is not just about ministers and deputy ministers, but about all other appointees in the structures.

According to the governance expert who is a foundational member of the J.A. Kufuor Foundation, the amount of money spent on presidential delegations to conferences and other events abroad is colossal, thus pruning large-sized governments must stretch beyond high-profiled appointees such as ministers-of-state.

The Akufo-Addo administration has sharply been criticized by political watchers over what they called ”too many ministers, and deputy ministers appointed to his government.” They say the act constitutes a leakage in the national kitty.

Three of the popular political candidates seeking to become the next president of Ghana have pledged to form smaller governments. Former President John Mahama of the NDC, the current Vice-President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia who is also the Flagbearer of the ruling NPP, and Mr Alan Kyeremanten of the Movement For Change have said that the number of ministers they will appoint would be 60, 50 and 30 respectively.
