Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a spokesperson for the campaign team of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) flagbearer has revealed that Mahamudu Bawumia was tasked by President Akufo-Addo to spearhead the government’s digitalization agenda to stimulate socio-economic development.

Dr. Bawumia’s comment about serving as a “mate” under the current administration during his lecture dubbed ‘Ghana’s Next Chapter: Selfless Leadership and Bold Solutions for the Future’ at the University of Professional Studies in Accra has been slapped with much criticism.

The IMF has listed digitization as one of the government’s positive initiatives, which will play a key role in Ghana’s post-COVID-19 economic recovery.

Mr. Aboagye, speaking in an interview on the digitalization agenda concerning Bawumia’s lecture said the Vice President, now serving as a flagbearer did not distance himself from responsibility with his comment.

“…But of course, the economic management team (EMT) is not the manager of the economy, they are only an advisory board to cabinet …so the real decision as to what happens at any time is with cabinet and not EMT.

“Then, he went on to say that, as a vice-president, his job is to support the president’s vision and the president’s execution of that vision, and that the president assigned him a specific responsibility,” he noted in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Asaase Radio.

“Which is to re-engineer the digital space, to make it the mainstay of the economy going into the future, and that is what he did, so his office was mandated specifically to focus on an aspect of the economy, which was to reengineer the digital space and ensure that it drives economic growth going into the future,” Miracles Aboagye added.
