Akufo-Addo commiserates with Namibia over death of President Geingob
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed his condolences to the government and citizenry of Namibia following the death of President Hage Geingob.
Geingob died early on Sunday, February 4, 2024, at Lady Pohamba Hospital in Windhoek, where he was receiving treatment from his medical team, the presidency said. He was 82.
President Akufo-Addo in a statement described Geingob as a dedicated servant of his people.
“The Ghanaian people and I express our deepest condolences to the Government and people of Namibia on the untimely passing of their President, His Excellency Hage Geingob. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Namibian nation during these challenging times”.
“President Geingob was not only a respected leader but also a dedicated servant of his people. His vision, commitment, and tireless efforts to advance the well-being of Namibians have left an indelible mark on the nation’s history. His leadership, characterized by wisdom and compassion, will be remembered not only within the borders of Namibia but also across the African continent. His legacy will endure as a beacon of inspiration for future generations, and the impact of his contributions to the progress and development of Namibia will be felt for years to come…May his soul rest in perfect peace until the last day of the resurrection when we meet again, Amen,” Akufo-Addo said.
Born in 1941, Geingob was a prominent politician before Namibia achieved independence from white minority-ruled South Africa in 1990.
He chaired the body that drafted Namibia’s constitution, then became its first prime minister at independence on March 21 of that year, a position he retained until 2002.
In 2007, Geingob became vice president of the governing South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO), which he had joined as an agitator for independence when Namibia was still known as South West Africa.
