2024 polls: Here are the new faces to ‘battle’ for the NPP

Source The Ghana Report

The delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have chosen the men and women to represent the party in various constituencies ahead of the 2024 elections.

On December 2, 2023, the party voted for some parliamentary candidates in their orphaned constituencies.

The governing party completed the remaining constituencies on December 27 for areas with sitting MPs.

At the end of the polls, many incumbent MPs, including the Sanitation Minister Freda Prempeh and Dome Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo, failed to retain their seats.

In all, 28 incumbent MPs lost their seats and will not return to parliament after the 2024 general elections.

Already, a significant number of experienced NPP lawmakers did not seek re-election and announced their current term as their last in Ghana’s parliament.

Some of these outgoing lawmakers are the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and the First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei-Owusu.

This now presents some new faces that will lead the NPP to either retain or snatch the parliamentary seats in various constituencies.

Their success will, in turn, mean new faces in the legislature, further increasing the attrition rate in parliament.

Some Ghanaians have already bemoaned the rise in attrition, arguing that parliament will lose some of the most experienced members with a vast memory of policies that played critical roles on its committees and helped the legislature effectively put the executive on its toes.

They have also questioned if the newly elected parliamentary candidates can match the wealth of knowledge or experience that the old guards brought to the legislative agenda.

Another question many may ask is, can these new faces conquer the battle and secure the majority in the 9th parliament for the NPP?

But it is worth mentioning that most new candidates are experienced in different sectors of the current government and their private, professional endeavours.

From presidential staffers, heads of government agencies and public offices, teachers, lawyers, economists and businessmen, this new crop of young NPP parliamentary candidates seem equipped and ready for the battle ahead, and their experiences and expertise may come to bear positively on parliamentary business.
