The police have arrested one suspect and are on a manhunt for others in the Yendi Constituency for electoral-related offences.

According to the police, the persons are suspected of damaging electoral materials while sorting ballots in the ongoing internal parliamentary primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“The police worked together with the military, in line with our established protocols, to restore law, order and security in the area. No persons are injured during the disturbance.

“We wish to assure the public that all persons behind this unfortunate act shall be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” the police said in a press statement released on Saturday, January 27.

Vote counting in Saturday’s NPP Parliamentary Primaries at the Yendi Constituency was disrupted after a polling agent allegedly bolted with some ballot papers.

The confusion is reported to have started after a supporter of an opponent, Abibata Shani Mahama Zakaria, accused the Electoral Commission (EC) officer of using indelible ink to invalidate the ballots of his favourite candidate.

During this confrontation, other NPP supporters gathered at the scene joined and caused chaos, bringing the electoral process to a halt.
