Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to hold mass burial for unclaimed, unidentified bodies

The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital intends to carry out a mass burial for all unknown, unclaimed, and unidentified bodies in its mortuary within the next two weeks.

The hospital, in a statement issued on January 24, 2024, said the move is to decongest its mortuary, which is currently full beyond its capacity.

“These bodies have been in the morgue for varying periods ranging from one to three years, and this has contributed to the exhaustion of the morgue’s capacity,” it added.

The hospital has, therefore, urged families who have the bodies of their relatives in our mortuary to come for them.

It will be recalled that in 2020, the management of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital announced to the public its intention to carry out a mass burial for some unknown and unclaimed bodies in its mortuary.

The bodies, which included victims of accidents, paupers, and those abandoned by family members were expected to be buried within the next two weeks.

A statement from the hospital, signed by the Head of Public Relations, Mustapha Salifu said the mass burial had become imperative because the hospital’s mortuary was “currently full beyond its carrying capacity”.

During that period, there was a ban on public gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, families were advised to hold private burial services for their relatives with about 25 family members only attending the ceremony.
