‘I’ve always been a free man’ – ACP Agordzo proclaims after coup trial victory
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dr Benjamin Agordzo, who was standing trial for his alleged role in destabilizing the country, said he has always been a free man because of his innocence.
His comments come after he, together with Colonel Gameli and another junior military officer, Corporal Seidu Abubakar, were acquitted and discharged in the coup plot case.
However, six other persons implicated in the coup plot have been convicted of conspiracy to commit high treason and committing high treason.
The six convicts are Donya Kafui, aka Ezor (a blacksmith), Bright Alan Debrah Ofosu (a fleet manager), Johannes Zikpi (a civilian employee of the Ghana Armed Forces), Warrant Officer II Esther Saan Dekuwine, Lance Corporal Ali Solomon and Corporal Sylvester Akanpewon.
Speaking to the media after court proceedings on Wednesday, January 24, ACP Agordzor indicated that he would consult his lawyers to know their next line of action.
“You heard the judgements, and you saw all the rebuttals. I don’t need to talk again. It was falsehood, but they continued perpetuating it and pushing it hard; it didn’t work.
“I will talk to my lawyers, and then we will talk to the media,” ACP Agordzor said.
He added, “I’ve always been free within my heart. I’ve always been free because I knew how it would end. From the beginning, I knew how it was going to end today. I didn’t know when it was going to end, but I knew how it was going to end. I was too confident.”
Wednesday’s judgment was delivered by a three-member panel of the High Court presided over by Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, a Justice of the Court of Appeal, after the conclusion of evidence.
