2023 Afcon: Security beefed up at Black Stars camp after Chris Hughton’s attack

Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum has said security at the camp of the Black Stars has been beefed up after Chris Hughton was assaulted.

Following Ghana’s defeat against Cape Verde in their Group B opener on Sunday, some irate fans verbally assaulted the former Premier League manager at the team hotel.

Speaking to BBC Sports, Asante-Twum the issue has been dealt with internally, adding that the security at the team camp has been improved.

“We’ve dealt with the issue internally,” the Ghana FA spokesperson said.

“There was only a verbal confrontation,” he added. “He was actually trying to get closer to the coach and then the security on duty intervened – there was no arrest but security took him away from the scene.

“Normally after games, tempers are high, emotions go up – we will try as much as possible to not allow this thing to repeat itself,” he added.

Four-time Afcon champions Ghana were unbeaten in their first five games under the former Tottenham full-back but have lost four of their past six.

Two of those defeats have been significant upsets, the loss to Cape Verde following on from a World Cup qualification shock at Comoros in November.

The Black Stars meanwhile will take on Egypt in their second Group B game on Thursday, January 18.
