Ghana Standards Authority to clamp down on ‘winter tyres’
The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) says its new Automotive Policy which is expected to be passed soon will enforce the ban on Grade ‘C’ tyres.
These tyres which are made for areas which encounter snow are often imported into the tropical areas like Ghana.
According to the GSA, most of the used cars imported from Europe and the U.S.A have tyres fit for low temperature areas.
Speaking on how the importation of such tyres will be checked, Project Coordinator of the Ghana Automotive Policy, at the Ghana Standards Authority, Macmman Prentice said the new regulation will bar such tyres from entering the country.
“In the directives of the policy, vehicles that have tyres of Grade ‘C’ will not be allowed into the country. Grade ‘C’ tyres are for places where they have snow”, he said stressing that only Grade ‘A’ and ‘B’ tyres will be allowed in the country.
Mr. Macmman however noted that even though the law has been in existence, it has not been enforced at the ports.
He gave the assurance that once the policy is passed into law, the GSA will ensure that such tyres do not enter the country.
